History

The Cleveland Technical Societies Council has been serving the Northeast Ohio community for over 60 years

The Early Years

Twenty-four societies founded the Council, 1941
Our first President was James H. Herron (Herron Testing Laboratories).
Our first Executive Director was Robert B. Cummings.
Articles of Incorporation filed in Columbus, 1942
First Annual Banquet, Hotel Carter, 1947
TV series encouraged high school students to study engineering and science, 1951
Building Program began for the new Cleveland Engineering and Scientific Center, 1953
First Northeastern Ohio Science Fair received Council support, 1954
Plant tours started for 9th grade science students, 1955

Awards And Scholarships

First Distinguished Service Award to Frederick C. Crawford, President, Thompson Products Inc., 1947
Award renamed Robert B. Cummings Distinguished Leadership Award, 2004
Technical Achievement Award created to honor someone under 37 years of age, 1952
Harry Gellin Student Aid Fund established, 1961
First CTSC scholarship recipient, 40th Annual Banquet, 1986; 73 awarded in 2001
Lubrizol Corporation endowed a scholarship fund, 1989

American Chemical Society, Cleveland Chapter, 1995;
Cleveland Society for Coatings Technology & Society of Applied Spectroscopy, 1996;
SAE, 1994;
Ferro Foundation and BP Chemicals 1996;
University Hospitals created 5 Urban Scholarships, 1998;
CCF created 5 Greater Cleveland Scholarships, 2001;
IES of North America, 2002.

Grants

Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and Ferro Foundation grants supported the Student Advocacy Program and the Educational Programs Database, 1995
Grants from Gund and Martha Holden Jennings Foundations aided North Coast Computer Recycling Center (formerly Computer Recycling Center), 1997
Cleveland Foundation Grant enabled the transfer of the North Coast Computer Recycling Center to the East Side Interfaith Ministries, 1998
Martha Holden Jennings Foundation grant initiated the Council’s Science Fair (Stimulation) Training Project for teachers, 2002 continued through 2004
Collaborated with CRCST to obtain a Martha Holden Jennings Foundation Grant to provide professional development for Pre-K-3 teachers in a program called, Science + Reading, 2010

Environmental studies organized with the Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teachers (CRCST), 1971
Helped to buy energy books for the Environmental Resources Center, Cleveland Public Library, 1975
First edition of “Northeast Ohio Guide to Technical/Scientific Enrichment Programs”, 1991
First High School Career Day held, 1995
CTSC representatives assisted Cleveland Public Schools in the Science Olympiad, 1995
Technology Initiatives Program established. Computer Recycling Center started.
Cosponsored Joint Engineering Technical Symposium, Project Management Seminar, 1996
Educational Math-Science database, over 100 programs in Greater Cleveland, 1997
Annual Program Planning/Collaboration Meeting started, 1998
Honor Juniors Workshop & University Fair expanded from initial 1985 program, 2003
